Europe – Timeless Europe: From Ancient Stones to Modern Streets

Our First Adventure in Paris: Memories from 1980

In 1980, after three years of marriage, Marc and Clare sought adventure in France for Clare’s first international trip. They navigated Paris with handwritten notes and paper maps, experiencing warmth from family, rich food, and vibrant culture. Their journey included visits to iconic sites like the Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre, interspersed with family gatherings in Mantes-la-Jolie, Prissé and Geneva. They enjoyed the countryside, discovering local traditions and hospitality. The trip became a cherished foundation for future travels, with memories of laughter, shared meals, and the kindness of strangers, forging deep connections between their lives and the French culture.

Italy – Greg’s International Program

Greg found a international business program in Paderno del Grappa, Italy in 2009 while he was at West Virginia University that he really wanted to attend.  While I’ve always encouraged Greg and Julie to explore the world, it was still a financial decision that we had to grapple with.  He went and then we decided to meet him with Julie and explore northern Italy for a couple or weeks.  That was a great family vacation.  Greg’s International Business Program trip.

France – Rhone Valley

Clare wanted to get away so she planned a trip to the Rhone Valley through Vantage.  The scenery was magnificent and the trip along the Rhone was pleasant when we were on the ship.  One problem was that there had been flooding and a barge hit the ship, gashing a hole so that part of the trip had to be accomplished by bus rather then cruising up the Rhone.  Unfortunate but everyone tried to make the best of it.

Spain

We went to Spain in 2016, visiting Barcelona, Madrid, Montserrat and  Toledo.  I’ve seen a great many cathedrals in Europe but I can honestly say, none compare to La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.

Rome, City of Seven Hills

In October 2017, we visited Rome. This was another Road Scholar tour but we went a number of days early to do some exploring before the tour, Roaming Rome: The City of Seven Hills, began.

Portugal

After visiting Spain, Clare and I decided we should also visit Portugal so we signed up for The Best of Portugal: From the Age of Discovery to Today in 2018.  Not only was the trip excellent but we had the best time with our fellow travelers.  The group really jelled and there was a great camaraderie by the end of the tour.

England

Clare and I took a trip to England in May, 2019.  Something I should have done years and years ago since I was a History major and took so many English history classes.   It was a marvelous trip and we certainly enjoyed the English hospitality.  England: Stonehenge to Hadrian’s Wall with Road Scholar.

The Best of Scotland

What an amazing country Scotland is, amazing history, amazing sites, amazing castles, and amazing whiskey. The scenery was amazing, the old towns were a treasure to behold and the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh were very interesting and made me want to return to explore some more.

The Best of Ireland, the Coast, the Countryside, and Dublin

The trip began in Killarney at the Earl’s Court hotel before venturing to the Dingle Peninsula. Stops included Dingle Town, scenic viewing areas, and notable landmarks. In Galway, attractions such as the Claddagh enclave and Galway Hooker Crew workshop were visited. The journey also included visits to Donegal, Sligo, and Dublin, with highlights including Inis Mor and Kilmainham Gaol.

Winter in Southern Spain: A Cultural & Historical Journey with Road Scholar

Southern Spain, notably Estepona, Málaga, Córdoba, Ronda, and Gibraltar, captivates with its beauty, history, and culture. The trip featured stunning architecture, traditional cuisine, and rich Moorish influences. Highlights included the Mezquita of Córdoba, Ronda’s dramatic landscapes, and Gibraltar’s unique blend of British and Spanish elements, creating an unforgettable experience steeped in tradition.

Explore Málaga and Sevilla: History and Culture Combined

Málaga, a city where ancient history meets modern vibrancy, is one of Spain’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. With its blend of Phoenician, Roman, Moorish, and Spanish influences, Málaga offers a fascinating look into the region’s past while embracing its artistic and cosmopolitan present.

Sevilla (Seville), the soul of Southern Spain, is a city of passion, history, and vibrant traditions. With its stunning Moorish palaces, grand cathedrals, and the fiery art of flamenco, Sevilla embodies the essence of Andalusian culture. As the capital of the region, it has been shaped by Roman, Moorish, and Spanish influences, making it one of Spain’s most captivating destinations. We stayed at the Hotel Inglaterra that had a nice bar and view on the roof.
